Find the Point Where Reading Became Difficult

A detailed reading assessment for children working within Grades 1–3 skills

This is not a quick grade-level quiz that simply tells you how many answers your child got right or wrong.

The Caterpillar Reading Diagnostic Assessment looks beneath the final score to find where reading first became difficult, which skills are already secure, and what patterns appear as the work becomes harder. It examines letter and sound knowledge, decoding, word patterns, sentence and passage reading, fluency, reading comprehension, and listening comprehension.

It also gives you space to notice how your child approaches reading—whether they guess, hesitate, lose their place, rely on memorized words, become frustrated, read accurately but slowly, or understand much more when someone else reads aloud.

The goal is not to attach a broad label to your child. It is to create a clearer reading profile so you can stop wondering where to begin and make the next instructional step more purposeful.

This assessment is designed for families who want to understand:

  • which early reading skills are already established

  • where the child’s reading begins to become less consistent

  • whether the child is guessing, memorizing, or truly decoding

  • which phonics and word-reading patterns need direct instruction

  • whether accuracy, fluency, or comprehension is creating the greatest difficulty

  • whether the child understands more when listening than when reading independently

  • what skill should be addressed first instead of trying to fix everything at once
